Old News is Good News: New Beach House & New Yeasayer in 2010

You’ve all heard both of these songs already, and we probably woulda posted them ages ago had it not been for STUPID *****host breaking our FREAKING servers every other day. Thanks a lot, hosting service, for sucking ass and making us fall behind on like, everything. Ugh. Anyway, Beach House and Yeasayer are 2 of our very favorite current artists here at the weapon and they’re both gearing up for new releases in early 2010. STOKED! Baltimore babes Beach House are set to release Teen Dream via Sub Pop on January 26th. Tracks include some good ones “Norway” and “Used To Be” - we think it’s gonna be positively FAB. Listen below and spill your guts in the comments.

Baltimore band Beach House playing a new song, Used to Be, in one spontaneous take for Shoot the Player - where else but at the beach in Sydney.

And as for Yeasayer - they’re aiming for a February 6th release of Odd Blood via Secretly Canadian. We looooooove the pants off of this band and have foolishly passed up every single opportunity to see them live. It kills. They do, however, have a whole SLEW of tour dates scheduled, one of which happens to be in Philly. Hopefully our dear JV will be willing to make an appearance in May? Regardless, we do hope to catch ‘em somewhere in 2010. Anyway, dig the new track “Ambling Alp” and get your free download of the single by visiting their killer website. Merry xmas to all, and to all a happy Wednesday. Oh, and not like we haven’t posted it before, but 2080 is one of the best songs ever. Seriously.

Durutti Column To Release Tony Wilson Tribute Early 2010

wilson-w-vini-wilson-w-vini-copyright-stephen-wright-smithsphotoscom-500x333 I fucking hate mondays. I hate them so much that I’d rather not participate in them at all, but this morning was cool cause while I was driving with one hand/tweeting/facebooking/smoking in shitty traffic, I came across the following news:

Manchester post-punk act The Durutti Column will release and perform A Paean to Wilson - a tribute to Factory Records co-founder and Hacienda nightclub manager Tony Wilson - in January next year.
Source: Durutti Column to release and perform tribute to Factory Records co-founder - Fact Magazine Truthfully, I find it strange that this news has been tweeted, retweeted, posted, and reposted, only because I’m pretty sure it’s the first most people have heard of this “Durutti Column” business, but I must state that they are basically my absolute favorite thing in the world and if I had one dying wish it’d be to have Vini Reilly come to my deathbed and play me a little diddy on his guitar. I’ve said that before - ask anyone who knows me. That’s why this is pretty special, because essentially this tribute album is EXACTLY that - a bunch of tunes written by Reilly for Wilson to groove on while in the hospital. Here’s what Mr. Reilly had to say about that:
“I was at the hospital when he died. We were very, very close. Afterwards, many things were done in his name. They were all about ‘Mr Manchester’, and about what Tony had done for music, art and literature. I didn’t attend many of them. I’d just lost one of my closest friends and I had all the grief that you feel under such circumstances. Once I’d got my act together though, I decided to do something for myself and for Tony. “The Durutti Column was Tony Wilson’s baby. We were the first act signed up to his Factory club night and the first band signed to Factory Records. Over the years we worked on many albums together and the one thing that Tony and I always argued about was that he thought that I should make music and write rather than sing. “After he died, I decided to make a body of work which did not have traditional song structures and which was concerned solely with the musical content. My only objective was to create some music that Tony would thoroughly approve of. I think I’ve done that and, if his spirit lives on - which I like to think that it does - I want him to know that this is for him.”
The record will be released on January 24th. The Whip

thewhip Ok, first off, the Whip is HIGHLY underrated.  Honestly, it shocks me that either no one gives enough props to this band, or they don’t seem to be getting the respect they deserve.  Yet another one of those bands that should be bigger than they actually are.  (But then again, there are countless amounts of those, aren’t they?) In any case, they’re a Manchester-based electro-rock foursome that formed in 2006.  They ran the semi-usual root of most good dance acts and funneled a single or two through Kitsune, and just released their debut a little over a year ago.  See what I mean?  A whole year later and they’re just now getting discovered by critics and fans over here in the States. The most common disposition that I’ve come across is how much they appear to ape New Order.  I agree, but I’m also totally fine with this, as they execute it well: “Trash,” their most popular single off their full-length X Marks Destination, makes great use of sequenced beats and hypnotic, repeated vocals.  Though a bit repetitive after a while, it’s pretty hard not to dance to it.  “Blackout” mixes a slightly distorted bass line pushed against new-wave synths and clean, choppy guitar riffs.  “Sister Siam” is probably the best example, going with borderline-technoesque beats, steady kick drum, and the typical riding of the hi-hats expected from this particular vein of dance music.  The vocals sometimes go a little too breath-y towards the end of lead singer Danny Saville’s phrases, especially “Trash” (think of the “James Hetfield effect” if you must), but he emotes well.  And “Divebomb,” their instrumental tour-de-force… well, it hits like a ton of bricks, and remains kind of a cult favorite.  All in all, as played-out as this style of music is becoming, the Whip does what they do consistently well, both on record and live. Speaking of which, dudes and lady just jumped off their US tour with DeadMau5 and Late of the Pier (I myself caught both acts at the TLA, but ironically not the Whip) and are now making the summer festival rounds.  They also just appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, playing “Trash” and one of my personal favorites “Muzzle #1.”  You can check “Trash” here: FULL DISCLOSURE ALERT: I think female drummer Lil Fee looks amazing in this video. Crushing just a little bit over here.

Strange Overtones - First MP3 from Upcoming Eno and Byrne Collaboration

Back in April I mentioned that Brian Eno and David Byrne had finished their second collborative effort and planned to tour late in 2008. The album, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today will hit the virtual shelves as DRM-free MP3’s on the 18th of August, and a tour will follow it. This is amazing and LONG over-due. (Their only other collaboration, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, was released over 20 years ago now.)
